English Translation Patch was created in 2000 by Lina. Thanks for coming back around for yet another round of Visual Novel Translation Status updates. I just want to thank all of our readers for coming by each week — doing these posts can be pretty tiring, and seeing the sheer volume of weekly visitors (and the comments some of you leave) helps a lot in the motivation department. Anyway! Welcome to our weekly VNTS (Visual Novel Translation Status) series, in which we track visual novel translation updates in- house (we don’t rely on /jp/ posts on 4ch, for example) and post it for your enlightenment and enjoyment each Saturday. If you find any errors, or you think a project is missing from this list, please let me know in the comments. The Short Version: Only the New Stuff. New Releases. Removed from the List This Week. Dergonu, translator for Tsui Yuri, also seems to have had a lot to do, and with him applying for higher education, that might continue. I think he’ll be able to keep the slow but steady pace he’s set for himself, though. Faito! Bishoujo Mangekyou’s first prologue patch was much maligned; perhaps this new version will be more pleasing as translator Arcadeotic claims it is much improved. I’ve heard the first patch was really bad, so it’s good to see it improved. With that said, it’s apparently a more plotty nukige, so I’m not really interested anyway. Rip. Two Manga. Gamer titles have finally gotten somewhere good! Both Himawari and Bokuten are now out of tl + edit. Front Wing may or may not cause a few more million- year delays when it comes to Himawari. Speaking of MG, it’s interesting how far along Sukisuki (If you love me, then say so! There was a lot of speculation regarding Chuablesoft’s president attending AX and maybe talking to loc companies there, so it’s kinda funny how far along it is. Chuablesoft’s president did reach out to the world in general when it came to localizing their VNs quite a while ago, so the deal might have been struck not that long after. I don’t know the script size for Sukisuki, but it didn’t strike me as particularly short from what I’ve heard. On the Grisaia front, while Deccy’s review is finally out, the unrated version seems to be taking a while. This is probably mostly due to technical differences between script formats, etc. We’ll see exactly when it actually does come out, but I wouldn’t bet on it taking just a month from the all- ages release. Eden progress is decent though, so there is that. The Afterglow of Grisaia is priced quite a bit higher than the earlier spinoff, but it is also about 4 times as long. That only means a script of 1. Grisaia was a monstrous 3. Its price point is kind of interesting, as you technically get ~4 times less text for your buck. On the other hand, I’m sure some people would say half of Kajitsu was bloat anyway . We can only hope its return in late August proves more attractive to backers. While people will say that it’s pointless since it’s already translated, the translation was apparently pretty bad – and in a work relying on mind games and piecing together subtle clues like Sharin, that’s something you really don’t want. Then again, I really suck at noticing plot holes and the like. I’m going abroad on 2 August and will be gone the entire month. I’ll probably have very spotty Internet access, so don’t count on anything from me until September rolls around. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch the Otakon news as they come in, so I can meh at the announcements yet again : P. If there’s enough stuff to talk about, se. No pressure, you three . It’ll only end in tears. Good news for Dracu Riot fans, after a period of only sporadic activity I’m back on the wagon again. I’ve edited a ton over the last few days and I hope to keep this up. Things got slow for us, and thus things have been delayed even further for a pretty wide variety of reasons, but now it finally feels like things are coming together. I hope you’ll forgive the delays as all kinds of real life issues happened to our various team members, and we’re really striving to deliver a quality product that we’re proud of. Considering the Staircase patch was completely unedited to begin with and contained numerous translation errors, this is not a simple process. I’m not Fiddle so you won’t see me throw out any overly optimistic release estimates, but soonish? Not very soon, just Soon! That game’s good, ya’ll. I found myself entertained pretty consistently throughout the VN. For whatever reason, this review took a lot of time for me to write. The actual process of writing a review usually comes relatively quick for me. I spend several hours writing in a single day and call it a wrap. This one spent nearly two weeks in gestation, however. The game sort of rouses confusing thoughts in me, I wasn’t really sure what to think of it considering it’s not really a complete story on its own. The way it blueballs the player at the end is sort of cruel. But ultimately I decided to just review it on its own merits. I really did find it enjoyable for the most part, even if I wish they didn’t structure the sequels in this way. Oh well, they’re already halfway done translating Eden so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for that. That Yoake patch leak is quite the sticky issue. It actually sparked a pretty extended argument between the leaker, Linktriforce. QCer back in the day, and Erengy, the tech guy and I guess additional QCer who was responsible for finishing up the patch. The patch that has been in this QC phase for over two years with zero progress. Seemed like Erengy wasn’t happy with how things went down and Linktriforce. Reddit simply seems to be happy that a patch was released at all, proving that it’s not just Steam users who don’t give a crap about translation quality, it’s actually a community- wide phenomenon. It’s just a messy situation all around. I say this all with full respect to the people involved, it’s a confusing and not great situation to be in for all participants, and you can’t really blame anyone for the actions they’ve taken and the things they’ve said. I suppose the good part about this is that it spurred Erengy to actually talk publicly about the project and he claims that he now possesses a large amount of free time he’ll use to actually finish the full translation patch. As for me, I’m patient enough to wait and see if this actually happens before jumping into the current unedited patch. Instead, I’m using my free time to finally play Danganronpa 2. I haven’t gotten to the first murder yet, but I sense I’m close. So far, it’s pretty okay, but it’s off to a somewhat slow start. I was a fan of the first game but I didn’t love everything about it. I had issues with how the protagonist was just sort of along for the ride and never really thought for himself, always having the other characters solve everything for him. That’s one of the problems with having a cipher protagonist in a mystery story. I’m not yet far enough in DR2 to be able to tell if that and some other issues I had will persist, but even if they do it seems like it will be a fun enough rollercoaster of a story. And if you’re wondering where the podcast is, well, you shouldn’t really expect an episode every week. They take a lot of time to produce and that’s time we simply won’t always have. Still, we’ll try to make them whenever we do have the time since the response has been pretty positive. Thank you everyone for your kind words, look forward to more podcasting from us in the future. See you all next week! TAYsteful. Fortunately, it’s basically over, and I’m ready to move on and focus on the positive. Speaking of the positive: the VNTS podcast is getting a lot of downloads, so thank you for listening to it! Last week’s episode got ~7. Cool! This week’s post is brought to you by Dumbledore’s Chorus. Well, by all Wizard Wrock, I suppose. But Dumbledore’s Chorus in particular because I listened to “Save Ginny Weasley” several times while doing the post. Have a good week, everybody. Sweet Home for NES (1. Description. Sweet Home follows the exploits of five members of an investigation group: Kazuo, Akiko, Taro, Asuka, and Emi. The famous painter Mamiya Ichirou lived many years in a secluded mansion, and rumor says there are some valuable frescos to find inside. Our investigators decide to take some pictures of the frescos. However, upon entering the mansion, a ghost- like figure of Mamiya appears and threatens them. After this, they find themselves trapped in the mansion. The heroes must now find a way out of the mansion, not forgetting the frescos they came there for, and the destiny of an earlier investigation group that has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The game mixes role- playing with survival horror elements. The basic structure is that of a Japanese- style RPG: characters fight random monsters in turn- based battles, equip various weapons and level up. The player must form different teams from the five available characters, both for battles and for solving puzzles. Each character has his (or her) own item- based skill: Taro can take pictures, Emi can unlock almost any door, Kazuo has a lighter, Akiko uses a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and other obstacles, and Asuka has medical kits. Although the plots differ, the cover art for the game is the same as the movie poster. The movie trailer also featured footage from the game. And indeed, in the game you will find a note that says . GIMP has now been updated with many user interface tweaks to make the application accessible to newbies. The biggest interface addition is the ability to edit in a single- window. GIMP versions of the past drew criticism for their confusing interfaces, but the developers are addressing many of these issues in this newest version. While single- window mode is great, it is also disappointing that there is no way to view multiple projects side by side. Other updated features include easier text editing, nested layer groups, and a shift to using the Generic Graphics Library (GEGL), which is a more sophisticated image processing framework. GEGL was introduced a couple of years back in a developer version and has now made its way into the sable, consumer version. GIMP developers hope to move entirely to GEGL by version 2. One of the major advantages of GIMP using GEGL is the ability for non- destructive editing and high bit- depth images.
GIMP now only saves to its own XCF format to retain layers and other file manipulation information. Users can still choose to save in formats like JPEG and PNG but will have to . This follows in the footsteps of Adobe Photoshop. Mac users will be happy to know that GIMP 2. OS X, without requiring the installation of X1. Both the Malabar and Coromandel Coasts were the sites of important trading centres from as early as the first century BC, used for import and export as well as transit points between the Mediterranean region and southeast Asia. Raychaudhuri and Habib claim this state patronage for overseas trade came to an end by the thirteenth century AD, when it was largely taken over by the local Parsi, Jewish, Syrian Christian and Muslim communities, initially on the Malabar and subsequently on the Coromandel coast. Villages paid a portion of their agricultural produce as revenue to the rulers, while their craftsmen received a part of the crops at harvest time for their services. Gold, silver and copper coins were issued by the royal mints which functioned on the basis of free coinage. After the loss at the Third Battle of Panipat, the Maratha Empire disintegrated into several confederate states, and the resulting political instability and armed conflict severely affected economic life in several parts of the country, although this was compensated for to some extent by localised prosperity in the new provincial kingdoms. This marked a determinative shift in India's trade, and a less powerful impact on the rest of the economy. As the painstaking statistical work of the Cambridge historian Angus Maddison has shown, India's share of world income collapsed from 2. Europe's share of 2. Indeed, at the beginning of the 2. It also established a system of railways and telegraphs, a civil service that aimed to be free from political interference, a common- law and an adversarial legal system. However, at the end of colonial rule, India inherited an economy that was one of the poorest in the developing world. Subsequently, the policy of discriminating protection (where certain important industries were given financial protection by the state), coupled with the Second World War, saw the development and dispersal of industries, encouraging rural- urban migration, and in particular the large port cities of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras grew rapidly. Despite this, only one- sixth of India's population lived in cities by 1. Leaders of the Indian independence movement and economic historians have blamed colonial rule for the dismal state of India's economy in its aftermath and argued that financial strength required for industrial development in Britain was derived from the wealth taken from India. At the same time, right- wing historians have countered that India's low economic performance was due to various sectors being in a state of growth and decline due to changes brought in by colonialism and a world that was moving towards industrialisation and economic integration. Steel, mining, machine tools, telecommunications, insurance, and power plants, among other industries, were effectively nationalised in the mid- 1. All GDP numbers are inflation adjusted to 1. I even need the government's permission for the salary I pay to a senior executive. The reforms did away with the Licence Raj, reduced tariffs and interest rates and ended many public monopolies, allowing automatic approval of foreign direct investment in many sectors. Since then, the overall thrust of liberalisation has remained the same, although no government has tried to take on powerful lobbies such as trade unions and farmers, on contentious issues such as reforming labour laws and reducing agricultural subsidies. An analog- to- digital converter (ADC) performs the reverse function. There are several DAC architectures; the suitability of a DAC for a particular application is determined by six main parameters: physical size, power consumption, resolution, maximum sampling frequency, accuracy and cost. Digital- to- analog conversion can degrade a signal, so a DAC should be specified that has insignificant errors in terms of the application. DACs are commonly used in music players to convert digital data streams into analog audio signals. They are also used in televisions and mobile phones to convert digital video data into analog video signals which connect to the screen drivers to display monochrome or color images. These two applications use DACs at opposite ends of the speed/resolution trade- off. The audio DAC is a low speed high resolution type while the video DAC is a high speed low to medium resolution type. Discrete DACs would typically be extremely high speed low resolution power hungry types, as used in military radar systems. Very high speed test equipment, especially sampling oscilloscopes, may also use discrete DACs. Overview. In particular, DACs are often used to convert finite- precision time series data to a continually varying physical signal. An ideal DAC converts the abstract numbers into a conceptual sequence of impulses that are then processed by a reconstruction filter using some form of interpolation to fill in data between the impulses. A conventional practical DAC converts the numbers into a piecewise constant function made up of a sequence of rectangular functions that is modeled with the zero- order hold. Other DAC methods such as those based on delta- sigma modulation) produce a pulse- density modulated output that can be similarly filtered to produce a smoothly varying signal. As per the Nyquist. Digital sampling introduces quantization error that manifests as low- level noise added to the reconstructed signal. In a practical DAC, a filter or the finite bandwidth of the device smooths out the step response into a continuous curve. Instead of impulses, a conventional practical DAC updates the analog voltage at uniform sampling intervals, which is then interpolated via a reconstruction filter to continuously varied levels. These numbers are written to the DAC, typically with a clock signal that causes each number to be latched in sequence, at which time the DAC output voltage changes rapidly from the previous value to the value represented by the currently latched number. The effect of this is that the output voltage is held in time at the current value until the next input number is latched, resulting in a piecewise constant or staircase- shaped output. This is equivalent to a zero- order hold operation and has an effect on the frequency response of the reconstructed signal. The fact that DACs output a sequence of piecewise constant values (known as zero- order hold in sample data textbooks) or rectangular pulses causes multiple harmonics above the Nyquist frequency. Usually, these are removed with a low pass filter acting as a reconstruction filter in applications that require it. Other DAC methods (e. Applications. To illustrate, consider a typical long- distance telephone call. The digital stream is then divided into network packets where it may be sent along with other digital data, not necessarily audio. The packets are then received at the destination, but each packet may take a completely different route and may not even arrive at the destination in the correct time order. The digital voice data is then extracted from the packets and assembled into a digital data stream. A DAC converts this back into an analog electrical signal, which drives an audio amplifier, which in turn drives a loudspeaker, which finally produces sound. Most modern audio signals are stored in digital form (for example MP3s and CDs) and in order to be heard through speakers they must be converted into an analog signal. DACs are therefore found in CD players, digital music players, and PC sound cards. Specialist standalone DACs can also be found in high- end hi- fi systems. These normally take the digital output of a compatible CD player or dedicated transport (which is basically a CD player with no internal DAC) and convert the signal into an analog line- level output that can then be fed into an amplifier to drive speakers. Similar digital- to- analog converters can be found in digital speakers such as USB speakers, and in sound cards. In Vo. IP (Voice over IP) applications, the source must first be digitized for transmission, so it undergoes conversion via an analog- to- digital converter, and is then reconstructed into analog using a DAC on the receiving party's end. LCD panel that only represents 6 or 7 bits per channel. Video signals from a digital source, such as a computer, must be converted to analog form if they are to be displayed on an analog monitor. As of 2. 00. 7, analog inputs were more commonly used than digital, but this changed as flat panel displays with DVI and/or HDMI connections became more widespread. The DAC is usually integrated with some memory (RAM), which contains conversion tables for gamma correction, contrast and brightness, to make a device called a RAMDAC. A device that is distantly related to the DAC is the digitally controlled potentiometer, used to control an analog signal digitally. Mechanical. A stable current or voltage is switched into a low- pass analog filter with a duration determined by the digital input code. This technique is often used for electric motor speed control, but has many other applications as well. Oversampling DACs or interpolating DACs such as the delta- sigma DAC, use a pulse density conversion technique. The oversampling technique allows for the use of a lower resolution DAC internally. A simple 1- bit DAC is often chosen because the oversampled result is inherently linear. The DAC is driven with a pulse- density modulated signal, created with the use of a low- pass filter, step nonlinearity (the actual 1- bit DAC), and negative feedback loop, in a technique called delta- sigma modulation. This results in an effective high- pass filter acting on the quantization (signal processing) noise, thus steering this noise out of the low frequencies of interest into the megahertz frequencies of little interest, which is called noise shaping. The quantization noise at these high frequencies is removed or greatly attenuated by use of an analog low- pass filter at the output (sometimes a simple RC low- pass circuit is sufficient). Most very high resolution DACs (greater than 1. Higher oversampling rates can relax the specifications of the output low- pass filter and enable further suppression of quantization noise. Speeds of greater than 1. Hz) and resolutions of 2. DACs. A short comparison with pulse- width modulation shows that a 1- bit DAC with a simple first- order integrator would have to run at 3 THz (which is physically unrealizable) to achieve 2. A single integrator is a low- pass filter with a frequency response inversely proportional to frequency and using one such integrator in the noise- shaping loop is a first order delta- sigma modulator. Multiple higher order topologies (such as MASH) are used to achieve higher degrees of noise- shaping with a stable topology. The binary- weighted DAC, which contains individual electrical components for each bit of the DAC connected to a summing point. These precise voltages or currents sum to the correct output value. This is one of the fastest conversion methods but suffers from poor accuracy because of the high precision required for each individual voltage or current. Such high- precision components are expensive, so this type of converter is usually limited to 8- bit resolution or less. Individual resistors are enabled or bypassed in the network based on the digital input. Switched current source DAC, from which different current sources are selected based on the digital input. Switched capacitor DAC contains a parallel capacitor network. Individual capacitors are connected or disconnected with switches based on the input. The R- 2. R ladder DAC which is a binary- weighted DAC that uses a repeating cascaded structure of resistor values R and 2. R. This improves the precision due to the relative ease of producing equal valued- matched resistors (or current sources). The Successive- Approximation or Cyclic DAC, which successively constructs the output during each cycle. Individual bits of the digital input are processed each cycle until the entire input is accounted for. The thermometer- coded DAC, which contains an equal resistor or current- source segment for each possible value of DAC output. An 8- bit thermometer DAC would have 2. DAC would have 6. This is perhaps the fastest and highest precision DAC architecture but at the expense of high cost. Conversion speeds of > 1 billion samples per second have been reached with this type of DAC. Hybrid DACs, which use a combination of the above techniques in a single converter. Most DAC integrated circuits are of this type due to the difficulty of getting low cost, high speed and high precision in one device. In this way, a compromise is obtained between precision (by the use of the thermometer- coded principle) and number of resistors or current sources (by the use of the binary- weighted principle). The full binary- weighted design means 0% segmentation, the full thermometer- coded design means 1. Log Shipping vs database mirroring. Today was the first notice I received that anyone had replied to this thread. This generally means that you are doing the log backups more frequently than you would be otherwise. This puts a considerably higher load on your disk subsystem, and if your disks are not setup optimally, you can experience system wide slowdown because of waits caused by log operations. That means less worker threads for processing queries. This is true whether you are mirroring synchonously (high safety) or asynchonously (high performance). If the mirrored database is experiencing high transactions, your databases will not be in sync, and if there is an outage, it could result in significant data loss. If transactions are being queued, the part of the tran log that has not been committed on the mirror can not be truncated or over- written. This can result in larger tran logs. If the tran logs get too big, and the servers are rebooted, database mirroring may not be able to resume mirroring because the scan of the transaction log will time out before the mirroring connection can be re- established. When this happens, SQL Server will keep both sides of the database offline leaving neither principal nor mirror available. The only way to recover from this scenario is to drop mirroring, shrink the log file, and then set up mirroring starting with a new full backup. If the databases are in different domains or geographical locations, you should use log shipping. Database mirroring will have difficulty maintaining the connection well enough to be effective.
